Have you ever dreamed of flying? Whether you want to fly for fun or pursue a career in aviation, the journey to becoming a pilot is both exciting and achievable. At Aviate Flight School, we’ve helped students of all backgrounds take their first steps into the sky. Here’s your step-by-step guide to getting started:
Your goals will shape your path. Ask yourself:
Do you want to fly for fun? → Private Pilot License (PPL)
Want to fly professionally? → Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot (ATP)
Interested in teaching? → Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
Start with a Private Pilot License—it’s the foundation for all higher certifications.
To start flight training in the U.S., you must:
Be at least 16 years old to solo, and 17 to get a Private Pilot License.
Be able to read, speak, and understand English.
Pass a Third-Class FAA Medical Exam from an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).
Your first taste of flying! A discovery flight is a short introductory lesson where you get to take the controls—with an instructor beside you. It’s fun, affordable, and gives you a real feel for what flight training is like.
Choose a reputable school like Aviate Flight School that:
Has modern, well-maintained aircraft
Offers structured curriculum
Employs experienced instructors
Supports both recreational and career paths
We’ll help you build a training plan based on your schedule, goals, and budget.
Before flying solo, you’ll need to understand the fundamentals:
Aerodynamics
FAA regulations
Weather and navigation
Radio communication
Flight planning
We offer both in-person and online options to match your learning style.
Your training includes dual flights with an instructor and eventually solo flights. You’ll learn:
Takeoffs and landings
Maneuvers
Emergency procedures
Cross-country flights
Night flying (if applicable)
You’ll need a minimum of 40 hours (20 with an instructor, 10 solo), though most students finish with 50–70 hours.
This 60-question multiple-choice test covers the knowledge you learned in ground school. We’ll guide you on how to prepare and where to take it.
Once your instructor endorses you, you’ll take your checkride—a combination of an oral exam and a flight test with an FAA examiner. Upon passing, you’re officially a licensed pilot!
After earning your Private Pilot License, you can go further:
Instrument Rating – Fly in clouds or low visibility
Commercial License – Get paid to fly
Multi-Engine Rating – Fly twin-engine aircraft
Flight Instructor (CFI) – Teach others to fly
Your aviation journey never has to stop.
Aviate Flight School is here to help you every step of the way—from your first discovery flight to your final checkride. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to begin, this is it.
